Missing Customer Service

Where has Customer Service gone? I can’t find it anymore. I got hung up on twice in 2 calls to AT&T’s round robin of taped instructions. It wasn’t a real person who cut me off. It was their system. This happened to a friend of mine, too when trying to speak with Verizon. When calling Customer Service of any major utility or government-run agency, why do we gnash our teeth and ball our hands into fists when trying to get through? Where is the Customer Service?

My grandmother used to go to lunch and play bridge at a now defunct department store in downtown Baltimore. While she was there, she might purchase a pretty hanky, charge it to her account, and have it delivered to her home. That’s great Customer Service as I remember it. In today’s world, she would likely be accosted getting off the Metro which wasn’t even built in her times; not be able to afford the lunch; and would definitely want to get home before dark. Forget the hanky, she’d buy a box of tissues from the Dollar Tree instead, endure the crowds and pushing and shoving at the checkout, and lug the purchase home with her.

How sad.
