I must bore you with one more April 17th segment of “60 Minutes.” This time they went to Riker’s Island, a prison in New York City that not only needs a major rehabilitation of the premises, it needs to fire the staff that operate it. 40% of the prison inmates at Riker’s, according to “60 Minutes,” are mentally disturbed. The staff is not trained in what to do to help these mentally challenged prisoners, so they choose to ignore them. One inmate with schizophrenia and who needed medical care was left in a cell in solitary confinement with no medical help for seven days until he just died of the medical complications. I guess we see the world through rose-colored glasses. We would never dream that something like this could occur, but it clearly does, and something needs to be done about it. Who is going to pick up the pieces at Riker’s? I don’t know, but I do know it needs immediate attention before more inmates die of ignorance by the Island’s Security Staff. Warning. Don’t watch “60 Minutes” alone.
